Minors

Students pursuing majors can enhance their degree with one of our interdisciplinary minors.

Whether you want to explore the life sciences more deeply or complement your major with courses that build environmental or biological literacy, our minors offer meaningful ways to broaden your academic experience and career potential.

Minor in Biology

A minor in biology is an excellent option for students majoring in disciplines outside of biology who wish to build a strong foundation in the life sciences.

Program Requirements

  • Minimum of 20 biology credits
  • Only courses that count toward the B.S. in Biology may be applied to the minor
  • A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required in all applicable courses
  • At least 9 upper-level biology credits must be completed at VCU

Course Substitutions

BNFO 251/LFSC 251 and BNFO 252/LFSC 252 are approved substitutes for BIOZ 151 and BIOZ 152, respectively.

Minor in Environmental Studies

A minor in environmental studies offers a multidisciplinary overview of environmental systems, combining natural and social sciences to explore today’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Program Requirements

  • Includes a mix of required and elective courses
  • At least one course must be taken in the natural sciences and one in the social sciences
  • 12 credits must be at the 300 level or above

Students should consult with their academic adviser for help selecting electives and ensuring they meet minor requirements.
