Environmental Studies Academic Advising
Our Environmental Studies program provides academic advising to help you achieve your educational, personal, and career goals through supportive guidance and informed decision-making. Our advising team is here to help you feel connected, access university resources, and move confidently toward academic and professional success.
Advising sessions are conducted by professional academic advisers for sophomores, juniors, and seniors with scheduled appointments. We also meet with new incoming transfer students and those interested in the Environmental Studies minor. Students may schedule virtual or in-person appointments via Navigate.
Environmental Studies advising can assist you with the following:
- Career and educational planning
- Understanding university procedures, appeals processes, policies, and regulations
- Course selection and scheduling
- Staying on track for timely graduation
- Identifying research, internship, and service-learning opportunities
- Preparing for graduate or professional school

Any Environmental Studies major can pursue research opportunities, whether you're a first-year student or a graduating senior. Opportunities may be advertised through departmental communications, but many students find faculty mentors by reaching out directly via email to express interest in their research.

When you're ready to declare a major or minor in environmental studies, please follow the instructions available through University Registrar.
You also are welcome to email envsadvising@vcu.edu to request an appointment to meet with one of our biology advisors. An appointment is not required for major or minor approval but is encouraged so you can begin educational planning.
Overrides for Environmental Studies courses (typically listed as ENVS in eServices) are handled through our advising office. Students seeking an override must complete the designated online request form.
Please review our guidelines on overrides and exceptions before submitting a request.
You can withdraw from a course through the first 10 weeks of classes.
After the add/drop period and through the end of the first 10 weeks of classes, students can withdraw from classes using eServices. Note: If you don't withdraw from a class before the 10-week deadline, you could receive failing grades in all or some of the courses. For a course that does not follow the standard semester calendar, the final withdrawal date is the day when one-half of the course has been completed.
