Bioinformatics Academic Advising
Our Bioinformatics program offers academic advising to support your educational, personal, and career goals through personalized guidance and informed planning. Whether you're exploring the intersection of biology and data science or preparing for a career in research, medicine, or industry, our advising team is here to help you stay connected, navigate university resources, and progress confidently toward academic and professional success.
Advising sessions are available by appointment with our professional academic advisors for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. We also meet with incoming transfer students and those pursuing the Bioinformatics minor. Students may schedule virtual or in-person appointments through Navigate.
Bioinformatics advising can assist you with the following:
- Academic and career planning
- Understanding university procedures, appeals processes, policies, and regulations
- Course selection and scheduling
- Staying on track for timely graduation
- Exploring research, internship, and lab opportunities

Any Bioinformatics major can pursue research opportunities, whether you're a first-year student or a graduating senior. Opportunities may be advertised through SLSS communications, but many students find faculty mentors by reaching out directly via email to express interest in their research.

When you're ready to declare a major or minor in environmental studies, please follow the instructions available through the University Registrar.
You are also welcome to email mahouskim@vcu.edu to request an advising appointment. An appointment is not required for major or minor approval but is encouraged so you can begin educational planning.
Overrides for Bioinformatics courses (typically listed as BNFO in eServices) are handled through our advising office. Students seeking an override must complete the designated online request form.
